Maintaining Your Hair Color               by SaraT
Do blondes really have more fun, are red heads as precocious as they say, is a brunette always going to be at the head of
the class? Maintaining your hair color is the most difficult and  crucial aspect of having color treated hair.
Below, I have broken maintenance needs down for the three main colors of hair; red, blond, brunette. Gray hair falls in the
blond category, while black falls under brunette. Xtreeme hair colors such as pinks, purples, blues and greens should
follow most of the guidelines for red, Xtreeme hair color must be properly maintained to avoid fading and poor color
conditioning. These are guild lines for maintaining your hair color. I can prescribe a routine for each individual, ask at your
next color appointment for which prescription of hair care would be right for you.
Top color fading causes; UV Rays, the wrong shampoo, heat styling, improper choice of styling products.
REALLY REDS
Red is especially hard to maintain, it tends to fade faster than any other hair color. Use these tips to ensure your reds stay
red.
Wait 48hrs after hair color to shampoo.
Do not shampoo more than two times a week. If your scalp is extra oily try a dry shampoo, I recommend Water Killer
by EVO
Use a color safe shampoo. Because a significant percentage of permanent hair color attach's to the outer cuticle
layers of the hair, even the most gentle cleansing agents in all shampoo loosens hair color pigment. I recommend
ACP shampoo and ACP conditioner.
Rinse your conditioner with cool water. Hair color pigment dislodges by the use of hot or warm water, though this is
necessary for the proper cleansing and rinsing of shampoo, it does leave the cuticle layers less supportive of color
pigment when cleansing. The cool water will help to seal the cuticle keep the pigment safer from other causes of hair
color.
Use a color lock product such as ACP* Color Lock to keep the red color molecule in the hair.
Avoid using wax products or pomades they bleed the red out.
Avoid over exposure to the sun or use a UV** blocking shampoo/conditioner such as ACP Shampoo and ACP
Conditioner. UV Rays are the second most damaging contributor to hair color fade.
Heat styling causes a breakdown of the outer cuticle layers that will tribute to color fading, limit your amount of heat
styling.
Make an appointment in the in-between time of your hair color for a Color Conditioning Mask. Or pick up Some
Reflessi Color Renewing Mask for at home use. This will keep your red color fresh.

BEAUTIFUL BRUNETTES
Browns are thought to be the easiest color to maintain, keeping your brown from fading and becoming dull is simple.
The sun plays havoc on brown hair color, to keep your color from bleaching use a sun blocking
shampoo/conditioner. I recommend ACP shampoo, and ACP conditioner.
Always use a color safe shampoo, rapid fading can occur due to highly alkaline nonprofessional products.
Be wary of botanical ingredients in shampoos they can actually strip the color from the hair or impede proper color
penetration and hold.
Use a shampoo/conditioner that has natural anti-oxidants to keep your warm browns from becoming orange and
your cool browns from becoming red.
Heat styling causes a breakdown of the outer cuticle layers that will tribute to color fading, limit your amount of heat
styling.

BREATHTAKING BLONDES
Blondes will not fade, however with the natural environment they may become brassy and loose their lustrous shine. Use
these tips to ensure your blonde stays brilliant.
Use a bluing conditioning mask to keep your blondes from being brassy. I recommend Riflessi Silver.
Use a chelating treatment shampoo one a week to help clarify your hair. I recommend ACP Chelating Shampoo.
Condition only the ends of the hair conditioning at the scalp may cause yellowing.
When using chlorinated pools or spas rinse your hair fully before entering the water even if do not plan to wet your
hair. The heat from the pool/spa will cause the water to evaporate though the chlorine will not and float above the
pool getting in to dry hair even when not in the pool. Chlorine can change the color and texture of your hair.
Boating, water/snow skiing, walking on the ocean and driving in a convertible car can cause the hair to become dull
and dry or straw like. Use a Color Lock or UV protector (such as ACP Color Lock), when engaging in any of these
activities. If you are going on a tropical vacation or are an avid outdoors woman I recommend adding a hair sun
screen to your hair like Happy Campers by EVO hair formula.
Sulfur-based medication can add warmth to light blonde colors, ask your doctor or pharmacist if the medication is
sulfur-based. To counter this use a violet based conditioning mask once or twice a week.
Well water can cause blondes to become brassy use a chelating shampoo once a week and a blue/violet based
conditioning mask.
